Twin Drift Trials: Episode 2

Twin Drift Trials Episode 2 was held on November 21, 2020. Round 3 will be announced in the future.

 What is Twin Drift Trials?

Twin Drift Trials is different than the usual tsuiso events. Instead of each driver battling against each other, Twin Drift Trials will put teams of 2 (lead driver and follow driver) against other teams to see which 2 drivers are the best together! In order to win the competition, teams must work with each other to synchronize their drifts as one.

 Format

Top 8 and Finals

A traditional bracket system will be used for the Top 8, and will be comprised of teams selected by judges during qualifying. Each team will be randomly placed in the bracket (see Section 4 for judging criteria). Qualifying teams will grid on the course, and runs will be judged not on the whole course, but on predefined sections.

Qualifying

Practice will start in the morning of the event, and will be used as qualifying. Judges will be onlooking all participants during practice, and will use their collaborative discretion in choosing teams to enter the Top 8. Although there is no point-system for this portion of the competition, the judging criteria will still be used for selection.

 Judging

Judges will be scoring teams based on a 100-point system, which contains 5 individual categories worth a certain maximum amount of points. Each category will be added together to accumulate the team’s total score. Judging starts at the first initiation, and will end after the last section of the course. Scoring must be completed by the judges prior to the next run. The judging criteria for each category can be found below.

Distance

40 points

The distance between the lead driver and follow driver has been deemed the most important aspect of twin drifting, and therefore is worth the most amount of points. Maintaining a minimal gap between cars will be highly rewarded.

MIMIC

30 points

The follow driver should be in sync with the lead driver, including initiating at the same time, and transitioning at the same time. The follow car should be mirroring every action of the lead car, and will showcase the skills of the drivers as a team.

Speed

15 points

Overall speed should maximize the ability of the car throughout the course. In the twin drifting context, both drivers’ speeds should be matched during the entire duration of the course.

Line

10 points

Taking the correct line will ensure the course is driven as intended. This will help judges apply criteria accurately and consistently to all competing teams. Both the lead and follow drivers should be driving the same line.

Style

5 points

Style is any criteria that does not fit in the other 4 categories. Style comprises of, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Throttle work

  • Hard, fast transitions

  • Angle
